Favorite Books Read In 2017

Recreation of an article from my old hacked/dead (RIP) website.

After 2 years in a row of finishing over 100 books, I dove down considerably in 2017 making it through 37.

I go through media phases. Usually it is in a yearly cycle with Books being more prominent in Spring and Summer and Movies taking over in the Fall and Winter. Music is sprinkled throughout with large spikes at random times through the year.

In addition to yearly cycles, I also go through larger years long cycles where I focus on one more than the other. As a young child I was a book boy for years. At some point in probably 6th or 7th grade, as my dad started to show me more movies, I switched mediums. In High School I brought books back in trying to read as many top 100 of the 20th century (not sure what list I was even looking at) that I could. College and early 20’s were weirdly more TV and music. Mid to late 20’s was all about the books again, right up until mid 2017. At some point in 2017 I started listening to the Blank Check movie podcast and it got me back into movies where I have been sitting ever since. I still have good book years, buy I’m not sure I will have another 100+ year like I did in 2015 & 2016 for quite some time, if ever.

Of the 37 I finished, these 14 were my favorite.

I will note that I’m putting this old post back together in 2023 after losing all my articles last year and made no updates to the actual list. I haven’t re-read any of these books since 2017, so this is based entirely on my 6 year memory of them. I also know that Yuval Noah Harari, and his books, haven’t aged gracefully since becoming popular. I still need to read up on that more. But 2017 Alex had no idea, so I included the book in the ranking I had from back then.
